On August 20, Marquette University is slated to confer on Georgia congressman John Lewis an honorary Doctor of Letters degree, as well as the privilege of addressing the incoming class of 2018 at the New Student Convocation, according to a press release. Lewis’s voting record is inconsistent with several Catholic teachings.
His voting record has earned him a rating of zero percent by the National Right to Life Committee. He voted against banning partial-birth abortions, for federally funded contraceptives, and for expanding stem cell research. He even voted against banning human cloning.
Additionally, Lewis’s legislative activity includes voting no to constitutionally defining marriage as between a man and a woman, no to constitutionally banning same-sex marriage, and no to banning homosexual adoptions. His website also includes a full list of similar bills that he has cosponsored.

Members of the Marquette class of 2018 have reportedly been assigned to read Lewis’s graphic novel, March: Book One, in preparation for his address. They will break up into small groups to discuss the book.
