Assemblymember Shannon Grove’s (R-Bakersfield ) bill, AB 2336, which would prohibit a person from performing an abortion if they have knowledge that the purpose of the abortion is to end the life of a girl in the womb, was heard in the Assembly Health Committee today. Grove stated, “I hope that women across California, regardless of political beliefs, will join me in condemning this attack upon girls.”

sexselectionabortionbAnissa Gallegos, spokeswoman for California ProLife Council, said in a statement on Tuesday, that “Sex-selective abortions are happening in California. There are practices now banned in India that are allowed to take place here. Because California has become a mecca of free, government-sponsored abortions, Indian women simply get on a plane and get their gender-selective abortions in California, gratis. It’s a form of abortion-tourism. California’s abortion industry has become a government boondoggle.”

The Assembly Health Committee heard the testimony of Angelique Guarneri (click here for video) a young woman whose mother brought her from India to California to be killed by an abortion, precisely because she was a girl. At the door of the clinic, Angelique’s mother was met by sidewalk counselors who volunteered to arrange an adoption. Angelique missed her intentional demise by a hair’s breadth.

Because of the nature of the issue, high-profile political leaders have started vocalizing their frustrations with sex-selective abortion’s inherent contradictions. The most recent instance being former President Jimmy Carter’s appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday, March 24, 2014, where he called sex-selective abortion the “the worst human rights abuse on earth.”

“I’ll start with the worst statistic that I know,” Carter continued, “and that is that a 160 million girls are missing from the face of the earth because they were murdered at birth by their parents or either selectively aborted when the parents find out that the fetus is a girl.”

AB 2336 will not likely fare well in the Assembly Committee on Health, chaired by Assemblymember Richard Pan, who is an advocate for unlimited abortion and unlimited abortion funding. He is heavily supported by Planned Parenthood. In spite of this, Assemblywoman Grove has promised to not let this issue go away, “Every member of the legislature, and particularly the ‘Women’s Caucus’ should be openly opposed to this horrific practice,” said Grove.

“We urge legislators of both parties to stand against this callous and despicable act of killing a girl simply because she is a girl,” said California ProLife’s Gallegos, “If Jimmy Carter and Hillary Clinton can condemn this, then every public official, regardless of party should step forward to address this injustice.”
