As expected Planned Parenthood’s “advocacy” arm has officially thrown down the gauntlet in Texas where pro-life Attorney General Greg Abbott goes head to head with pro-abortion feminist “icon” state Sen. Wendy Davis.
“This is a real opportunity to ensure that women and men are aware of the position of candidates running for election and the positions of officeholders who have taken away health care access to thousands of women in the state,” PPFA President Cecile Richards said. “I think that Greg Abbott, and certainly Gov. Rick Perry, are out of touch with where Texas voters are.”
Richards is the daughter of the late Ann Richards, the last Democrat to be elected governor. Ann Richards lost her re-election bid to George W. Bush.
(The usual pro-abortion armada of advocacy groups is lining up behind Davis but PPFA is the best known and a particular media favorite.)
Well, we certainly agree with Ms. Richards that the people of the state of Texas ought to know where Abbott and Davis stand on abortion. They are about as far apart as you could get.
Davis, of course, turned her 15 minutes of fame (actually it was eleven hours) into a launching pad for governor. She filibustered a law that would protect from abortion unborn children capable of feeling pain. Gov. Perry called another special session, the bill passed, but Davis had become a media darling.
According to the AP’s Chris Tomlinson, Yvonne Gutierrez will serve as executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes Texas. “It’s important to educate women about what’s been happening in our state and how their votes can actually make a difference,” Gutierrez said. “If we don’t get women into the voting booth now, it could get worse rather than get better.”
Richards told reporters in effect, they will import the same strategy that elected pro-abortion Terry McAuliffe in Virginia. But, as is often the case, Richards misrepresented Planned Parenthood’s impact, even though it spent loads of money in the gubernatorial contest against pro-life Ken Cuccinelli.(See nrlc.cc/1kQtkTh and nrlc.cc/1kQtJFu.)

As we noted after the election, “Democrat McAuliffe won by 56,000 votes out of more than 2 million votes cast, although Republican Cuccinelli was vastly outspent, hindered by a bevy of polls which consistently placed him far behind (thus discouraging contributions and supporters) and hampered by the presence of a third party candidate, and was the personal punching bag of newspapers such as the Washington Post.
Except for the unyielding, fact-twisting animosity of the major Texas newspapers, Mr. Abbott has none of those hurdles to overcome.
