The Duggar Family, the stars of the popular television reality show “19 Kids and Counting,” are the winners of a national pro-life award given out by Students for Life of America.

Kristan Hawkins, the president of the pro-life student group, announced the award.

“Throughout their marriage Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have been great defenders for life, both privately and publicly. Early in their marriage the Duggars embraced the gift of life and opened their hearts to the family that God would give them. Embarking on a unique journey that has led to the abundant blessings of 19 children and 3 grandchildren; the Duggars personal life witness has been one that has challenged those around them to understand and accept the gift of life in their own marriages,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins continued: “The Duggars’ love for children does not end with their own children and grandchildren. They have also worked passionately to support the rights of the pre-born in America. After participating in a pro-life rally in front of the Arkansas state capitol, Jim Bob was inspired to run for a public office and was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives, where he served from 1999–2003.”

She told LifeNews: “After taking their defense of life to the state level, the Duggars courageously opened up their home in 2008 as a witness to the nation through the TLC program “19 Kids and Counting.” Where they boldly shared their commitment to accept, love, and provide for all the children God was willing to gift them with. In a culture that embraces a mantra of casual sex, wanted children, and abortion on demand for any reason, the Duggars graciously showed the nation that you can have a healthy marriage and embrace the gift of life – as many times as you are given!”

This past year, Jim Bob and Michelle have been actively working in Tennessee supporting and advocating for Amendment 1, a provision which would create life-saving restrictions on abortion in the state. Tennessee’s Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the state’s constitution did not allow for lawmakers to restrict access to abortions, making Tennessee the state with the most liberal abortion laws in the nation.

“We must join together and end the baby holocaust that is taking place right here in Tennessee,” Michelle has passionately stated while working in the state.

“It is for their exceptional work and personal courage to embrace the gift of life that Students for Life of America is proud to honor Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar as our 2013 Defender of Life Award Recipients at SFLA’s 2014 National Conference on January 21st,” Hawkins said.

The award comes at a time when liberals are attempting to get the show canceled because of a comment Jim Bob Duggar made during Family Research Council’s recent Values Voter Summit comparing abortion to the holocaust.

“Let me clarify,” he said. “We have since 1973 (when Roe v. Wade was decided) had 55 million abortions, so what we have going on is a baby holocaust,” Duggar said.
