Courtney Halvorson is a senior at Gaston High School in Alabama who enjoys life — but she shouldn’t be alive. Not because of a drunk driver, or doing drugs, or some other tragic death that claims the life of a young person — Courtney shouldn’t be alive because she was supposed to have died from an abortion.

When she was 14, this teenage girl found out she was adopted — something that shocked her but something that was less shocking than what she found out next.

From this amazing report about Courtney’s life:

Courtney’s birth mother had an abortion when she was six weeks pregnant, sometime in late January 1996. What her birth mother or the person who performed the abortion did not know, Courtney said, was that she was pregnant with twins. Courtney survived. Her twin did not.

“She went back for an ultrasound in March 1996 and she found out her abortion worked only halfway,” Courtney said. “She was having twins and I was still alive.”

Courtney’s birth mother had an option to have another abortion. “But since she could hear my heartbeat, she decided to give me life,” she said.

Courtney was born prematurely on June 19, 1996, and weighed 1 pound, 2 ounces. Her mother was 27 weeks pregnant.

She was adopted by her parents, Darlene and Glenn Halvorson. Her adoptive mother was a nurse in Birmingham and it was there she met Courtney’s birth mother.

“The doctors told my adoptive parents that I would not live,” Courtney said. She was hospitalized for three months and has had a few health problems common to premature births such as Crohn’s disease and hydronephrosis, a disorder of her right kidney. She also has had multiple foot surgeries.”

“Not a day goes by that I don’t of my twin and wonder what could have been,” Courtney said. “But I know God has a plan for me, and I know my sweet twin has an eye on me all the time.”

“I hope one day people will realize that abortion is a murder and there are many other options,” she said. “But until then, I’m going to continue to share my story.”
