Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) abruptly canceled access to a Senate Office building meeting room the night before a scheduled Capitol Hill Symposium.

Sen. Kirk’s spokesman, Lance Trover, told a reporter, “Sen. Kirk doesn’t affiliate with groups that discriminate.”

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Senior Fellow of Concerned Women for America’s Beverly LaHaye Institute asked, ‘Is it discrimination or religious liberty and freedom of speech? A group of taxpaying Americans scheduled a room in one of the nation’s  public buildings to hold a scholarly symposium discussing what we can learn – positively and negatively – from other nations about family policy.”

Crouse added, “Fundamental principles of freedom are religious liberty and freedom of speech. Strong-arm tactics and thuggery , name-calling and bullying should be condemned and disallowed in the nation’s capitol buildings, not conservative leaders who are presenting scholarly presentations about fundamental questions regarding what’s best for families and children.”

The twice-yearly Capitol Hill Symposium is sponsored by The Family in America, a scholarly journal published by the Howard Center in Rockford, IL. In addition to Crouse,  other panelists included Austin Ruse of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, Steven Mosher of the Population Research Institute and Allan Carlson of the Howard Center. The panelists gave their perspectives at a hastily-arranged new location.

Dr. Crouse described the impact from the worldwide pro-family movements, especially the World Congress of Families and  grassroots movements rence  in countries like France and Spain. She also described the dynamic impact of individual leaders in countries like Nigeria and Trinidad. She talked about the influence that pro-family leaders are having at the UN and in formal efforts to promote pro-family policies.

Crouse declared, “Under the leadership of the Howard Center – a small, but prestigious think tank in Illinois — efforts to strengthen the family are being infused with new energy and vitality from pro-family supporters who simply won’t give up.”

She concluded with a challenge:  “Concerned citizens – those who care enough to stand for truth and for the family against the fierce opposition of radical left activists – encourage us to take heart, keep the faith and move forward confident in the power of truth and faithfulness.”
