How Many Kermit Gosnells Will Come From California’s New Law OKing Nurses Doing Abortions?

A recent MSNBC blog post caught my eye when it stated that a recent California law that allows non-physicians to perform first-trimester abortions was doing more to prevent more Kermit Gosnells than pro-life measures being passed in other parts of the country.

The author also argues that pro-lifers ought to have cheered the passage of a law designed to make abortions easier to obtain by lowering the medical standard for the type of personnel who may perform them.

The blogger notes that the California law (Assembly Bill 154) is guided by scientific evidence, principally a study appearing in the American Journal of Public Health, which purported to find that complications from abortions performed by newly trained Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Certified Nurse-Midwives were clinically equivalent to those performed by a physician.

So, there you go! Hard medical evidence in a multi-year empirical study of over 11,000 abortions. But the authors of this study are not without motive; this was science strictly in the service of a political agenda.

Most of the authors of the study are members of a pro-abortion group called Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health. Another author is a physician who has said, “It makes me feel really good that I can…do research and hopefully broaden women’s access to abortion and reproductive care.” And finally, one of the authors is the Senior Director of Clinical Services and Medical Education for Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The policy application based on this piece of work from the University of Southern California-San Francisco — “America’s abortion training academy”–is stunning. The logic of it as undeniable as it is lethal because abortion proponents never cease in their efforts to legitimate the most efficient means of exterminating the lives of the unborn. Worse, they will promote this agenda under the pretense of helping the poor and minorities which really means that the law is aimed at aborting even more poor and minority babies.

But their argument ignores the premises that unborn life is human life, that abortion ends an innocent life, and that innocent human life ought to be protected. In ignoring these facts, the pro-abortion machinery in California continues has advanced its goal of destroying life.

And, as the Washington Times quoted Anissa Smith, spokeswoman for the California Pro-Life Council: “Reducing the medical standards for abortion, both in the personnel and the sanitary conditions required, defies logic for those who say they care about women.”

To ignore all of this is foolish because this is what the abortion industry wants not just for California, but for the Nation!
