A national pro-life group and its Kentucky affiliate today endorsed Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell in his bid for re-election in the Bluegrass State next year.

National Right to Life today joined with its state affiliate, Kentucky Right to Life, in issuing a ringing endorsement of Senator Mitch McConnell’s re-election to the United States Senate, calling the lawmaker “irreplaceable” for the pro-life cause.

“For many years, Senator McConnell has been among the most effective legislative champions of the pro-life cause – and the most skillful obstacle to the forces pushing radical anti-life agendas,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, at a press conference in Louisville.

McConnell has a 61-1 pro-life voting record on the 62 pro-life votes on abortion and other pro-life-related issues NRLC has scored over the years for the senator.

In a letter to Sen. McConnell announcing the endorsement, National Right to Life leaders said, “You have fought tirelessly in defense of the most vulnerable members of the human family, and for that we are deeply grateful. Those who care first about innocent human life recognize that your continued leadership in the U.S. Senate is irreplaceable.”

McConnell has been a key supporter of every major pro-life initiative to come before the U.S. Senate during his tenure, including current legislation to protect unborn children at 20 weeks, a point by which the unborn child is capable of experiencing great pain when being killed by dismemberment or other late abortion techniques. He has also been instrumental in blocking some of President Obama’s most radical nominees to the federal judiciary.

In addition, NRLC says McConnell has been the Senate’s chief defender of the First Amendment right of citizen groups to communicate with the public about the positions and voting records of those who hold or seek public office, and a courageous foe of attempts to curb that right under the guise of “campaign finance reform.” Tobias commented, “Our right to speak directly to the public, explaining the actions of elected officials, is critical to the survival and success of the pro-life movement.”

National Right to Life Federal Legislative Director Douglas Johnson said, “Mitch McConnell is the single greatest obstacle in the U.S. Senate to the relentless efforts of an avidly pro-abortion President, backed by powerful liberal elites from Hollywood to New York City, to radically expand the power of federal bureaucrats, pack the U.S. Supreme Court with robed social engineers, and strip away protections from unborn children and from the medically vulnerable.”
