ChinaAid learned on Aug. 26, 2013 that Chinese Christian Wang Xuebai had been out of contact for several days. It is believed that Wang was detained in connection with her appeals to the government on behalf of her husband.

Wang’s troubles began in 2009 when her husband, Li Defu was forced to undergo a vasectomy in the city of Shangqiu, Minquan, Henan Province. Wang appealed the court to guard her husband’s rights, but was threatened and detained.

Village leaders forced Li to undergo the sterilization procedure in September 2009 because the couple already had two children, which violates China’s One Child policy.

Two weeks after the procedure, Li began experiencing pain in his midsection and testis, but Li just assumed this pain was a common side effect. However, the pain only worsened with time, becoming so painful that Li could not even go to his job on a farm.

“Although I have been taking him to all the hospitals around, there is still no sign of recovery,” Wang said. “On the contrary, it becomes even worse. In November 2011, he was completely paralyzed in bed.” In the beginning of 2012, the pain was so unbearable that Wang took her husband to the Family Planning department in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, to get Li examined. The physicians at the Family Planning department confirmed that Li’s pain and paralysis were caused by the vasectomy procedure.

Wang once again appealed for justice to be done in her husband’s case, but she was threatened with detainment. Wang was subsequently detained several times including an incident on Oct. 25, 2012, when she was extra-judicially imprisoned until Nov. 4, 2012.

Wang cares for her husband.

Recently, Wang was threatened again by the local government. The court told her she was prohibited from coming to the court, but she continued to appeal for justice.

On July 22, 2013, the government sent two cars to Wang’s cousin’s house where they forced Li to travel to Shangqiu for a medical examination. The results, released on Aug. 3, stated that Li’s pain and paralysis were not caused by the vasectomy procedure. Wang was once again warned that if she continued to make trouble, she would be detained. Wang has been out of contact for approximately a week now, and it is believed that she has been imprisoned by the government once again.
