Seventy year-old Holland Taylor has played a wide-range of supporting roles in numerous television productions as well as bit parts in just as many movies. In 2013 the Emmy award-winning actress wrote and starred in a one-woman and quite rhapsodic Broadway show about former (rabidly pro-abortion) Texas Governor, Ann Richards.
Although Taylor was critically acclaimed for her turn as the alcoholic one-term governor and mother of Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, the show closed much earlier than anticipated. Incredibly poor showing at the box office makes it seem that even übber-liberal New Yorkers (like those of us in the real world) could only take Richards in small doses.
Most recently Taylor lent her support to the radical and extreme pro-abortion advocacy group A Is For.
A Is For describes themselves this way:
A Is For serves as an ally and advocate for organizations working to protect reproductive rights; we are a unifying forum utilizing social media to spotlight issues and encourage activism. A is for all of us.
The scarlet letter “A” is an instantly recognizable symbol of excoriation and shame.
A is For is a campaign challenging the traditional meaning of the scarlet letter by encouraging women, and the men who support them, to wear the A proudly. We are taking back the A by re-appropriating its meaning to one of dignity, defiance, and autonomy.
We take our inspiration from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s fictional heroine of 17th century Puritan Boston, Hester Prynne, a woman branded by her fellows for daring to live a life according to her own conscience. We are refusing to be shamed into silence.
What Holland Taylor did for them was record a rambling and disjointed 3-½ minute video they’ve been promulgating on the Internet. It’s their shtick – celebrities and those who pass for celebrities record a video message that begins with “A is for…” and ends with “send us more money.” If you make a donation just large enough they will also mail you a prêt-à-porter scarlet A of your very own. Charming.
As Taylor’s video begins we see that she’s wearing her A and is resting her arms on the back of the chair she’s straddling. She stares into the camera and claims that her A is for Anger (I know, I know – the interminable redundancy of an angry feminist.) She goes on to explain:
There is an army of angry men and women [angry] about this upsurge of something we thought we were long done with – this odd sexist oppression of women and their control over their lives.
It’s the same boring and standard pro-abortion dribble we’ve heard from most limousine-liberals whether in the Texas State House or the Broadway stage – but then she says this:
The people who are for this kind of control have very cleverly shifted the argument of personal freedom and freedom in general away from the individual and onto a collection of cells inside an individual.
It gets worse.
…even the potential for a collection of cells has more rights than the woman bearing those cells.
I was so taken-aback with the callousness of the words spewing from her that I immediately downloaded the video to my hard-drive. I was certain that someone would eventually realize how wildly inappropriate, insensitive and inaccurate her statement was and delete the video from that website. But no – several weeks later – it is still available on-line.
There is no acceptable excuse or logical explanation for what she said.
I know it’s been decades since Miss Taylor has had to think about pregnancy in personal terms and as a result she might be mostly unaware of the staggering advances in obstetrics and gynecology since she was last fertile. And it may very well be that the liberal arts college from where she graduated didn’t require biology credits for certificates in drama.

Either way – to repeatedly describe an unborn child as a collection of cells is contemptible and caustic. This video, Taylor, and the ladies at A Is For continuously ignore basic science and once again demonstrate the deadly disconnect between those who shill and profit for the abortion industry and those of us who’ve come understand, acknowledge and defend the humanity of the unborn child.
They would also be well served to brush up on their American Literature. In their zeal to co-opt Hester’s “bad girl” persona they’ve glossed over (or completely missed) Hester’s motivation for the good she ends up doing – motherhood
Hester’s motivation was her daughter Pearl – the much-deprecated “collection of cells” condemned by Holland Taylor. A isn’t for motherhood – it’s for abortion. And to their great shame dehumanizing unborn children is all they have.
