Men Behaving Badly: BroChoicers Want Abortions Legal to Sexually Prey on Women

Maybe I don’t read enough of the material put out by advocates of abortion, but I was appalled by a recent article in the “Burnt Orange Report.” I suppose I should probably thank them for letting us see the real reason some men support legal abortion.

On the blog, Ben Sherman explains why “Texas men who like women” should oppose HB 2, the pro-life bill passed by the Texas legislature. He tries to show us how supportive he is of women and legal abortion, but he soon reveals himself to be a selfish, immature cad.

According to Sherman, a law that places limits on abortion “will have serious consequences both on men’s lives and lifestyles” so “when men stand with Texas women against this bill, they are also standing with Texas men.”

Sherman is bold (crass?) enough to write that “For those of us guys who like girls — you know, like them like them — and want to have relationships with them that may last anywhere from a few minutes to many years, we need to think about how this bill, by curtailing the bodily autonomy and sexual freedom of women, hurts us, too. We need to stand with women in their fight to control their own bodies.”

Sherman expresses some concern about abortion being outlawed and brings out the old obligatory cliche about back-alley abortions, then quickly moves on to how men—or at least a certain kind of man–are affected if abortion is not available.

He writes, “This bill will force thousands of Texas men into unplanned fatherhood by making it impossible for women to access an abortion in the event of an unplanned pregnancy.”

Probably most revealing is his argument, “Your sex life is at stake. Can you think of anything that kills the vibe faster than a woman fearing a back-alley abortion? Making abortion essentially inaccessible in Texas will add an anxiety to sex that will drastically undercut its joys. And don’t be surprised if casual sex outside of relationships becomes far more difficult to come by.”

Wow! Hope that your daughter, sister, or friend doesn’t end up with a guy like this.

Studies have shown that one of the main reasons a woman gets an abortion is that she doesn’t think she will have the support of her boyfriend/husband to help during the pregnancy or in raising the child, or that he is pressuring her to having an abortion.

There was, of course, a vigorous response. In a posting the following week, Sherman accused “right-wingers” of misrepresenting his comments. It’s pretty hard to read his comments and not think that he is just a man who wants his fun with no responsibility.

Unfortunately, Ben Sherman is showing us that these men really do exist.
