The lawyer of a man who police say tricked his pregnant girlfriend into taking an abortion causing drug is requesting bail for his client, who is being charged with product tampering and murder in the death of the couple’s 6 to 7-week-old unborn baby.

John Weldon acquired the dangerous abortion pill Cytotec by forging the name of his father, who is a physician, on a stolen prescription pad. He then filed the pills to disguise their true identity, put them in a bottle of amoxicillin (a harmless antibiotic) and tricked his girlfriend, Remee Lee, into taking them. The drug killed Lee’s unborn child.

Lee had been happy and excited about being pregnant and was looking forward to the birth of her child. She was abstaining from caffeine and avoiding cigarette smoke whenever possible, determined to have a healthy baby despite the  pressure Weldon was putting on her to abort. As far as anyone knows, the unborn baby was developing normally, with a beating heart and developing brain, until the drug killed him or her.

New information has come to light suggesting that Weldon’s motives for killing the unborn baby may have been related to a relationship he was having with another woman.  He allegedly wanted to hide Lee’s pregnancy from this other woman, who he was seeing without her knowledge.

In response to the attorney’s request for bail, prosecutors have filed a 44 page motion asking the judge to deny bail and keep Weldon in prison.

According to ABC news, this case is getting “nationwide attention” because of the way it relates to abortion. The charges against Weldon show how strange and contradictory laws dealing with unborn children are. Had an abortionist killed Lee’s baby with her consent, it would have been business as usual, not a crime. Because Weldon aborted the baby against Lee’s will, using trickery, he is being charged with first-degree murder.
