While the rest of the pro-life movement lobbies today for the ban on abortions from 20 weeks to the point of birth, one pro-life organization is apparently calling members of Congress to oppose it.
Georgia Right to Life issued an action alert to its members calling on them to urge members of Congress to oppose the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 1797) because it, as most pro-life legislation does, has exceptions for rape and incest. Women considering an abortion late in pregnancy likely never consider an abortion for such a reason, but GRTL decided that those exceptions were enough to seek the defeat of a bill that would stop late-term abortions that have killed 1-2 million unborn children since Roe.

The attacks on the legislation from the state pro-life group have already persuaded one pro-life Congressman to pull his name from the bill.
U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens, on Monday night pulled his support for a measure that would ban a woman’s right to abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy, highlighting a split between the foremost national anti-abortion group and its Georgia counterpart. Georgia Right to Life has yet to be heard from officially, but on WSB Radio last night, Erick Erickson of Redstate.com reported that GRTL was in the process of phoning members of Congress, urging them to vote against the bill.
UPDATE: Congressman Broun is unable to remove his name from the bill, as it is too late in the legislative process for changes to be made before today’s vote.
The attacks on the late-term abortion ban from GRTL come as the National Right to Life Committee joins with a wide range of pro-fie groups — including Susan B. Anthony List, Americans United for Life, Live Action, Students for Life, Priests for Life and others in supporting the 20-week abortion ban. As LifeNews reported yesterday, National Right to Life, which is directing its salvos at abortion advocates instead of pro-life lawmakers, said anyone who votes against the bill is putting themselves on par with Kermit Gosnell. Gosnell is the abortion practitioner who was convicted on multiple counts of first-degree murder for late-term abortions that were essentially infanticides.

“This bill is the most significant piece of pro-life legislation to come before the House since the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, which the U.S. Supreme Court upheld in 2007,” said NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson.
But he warned pro-abortion lawmakers to vote against the bill that they are putting themselves in league with Gosnell.
“Any lawmaker who votes to allow unlimited abortion in the sixth month or later is voting to encourage a continuation of the horrors associated with the likes of Kermit Gosnell,” he told LifeNews.
