If Pelosi’s a “Practicing Catholic” Why Can’t She Follow Church Abortion Teaching?

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi made more eye-rolling comments yesterday when she called defending legal abortions to the point of opposing a late-term abortion ban “sacred ground.”

“As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this,” Pelosi said about efforts to stop late-term abortions. “This shouldn’t have anything to do with politics.”

The head of a pro-life women’s group has a good question for Pelosi:  If she is truly a “practicing Catholic” why can’t she support the Catholic Church’s pro-life teachings against abortions?

“As a mother and practicing Catholic, I have a modest proposal for Mrs. Pelosi: that she consider the Church’s teaching which says each life is sacred and reject the idea that each abortion is,” says Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List.

“As a practicing Catholic, Nancy Pelosi knows full well there’s no moral difference between the atrocities of Kermit Gosnell and abortions in the womb,” Dannenfelser continued. “She also knows that politics has everything to do with it: The bill she is trying to shut down – the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act — would protect these babies and women from the pain of late-term abortion.”

“Pelosi’s refusal to answer shows how scared she and the pro-abortion lobby are of the bill, which is exactly why they are trying to shut it down. They’ve seen the same polling we have: The majority of Americans reject late-term abortion,” Danenfelser added. “The bill is scheduled to hit the House floor next week – but it won’t if Pelosi and the pro-abortion lobby have their way. In fact, NARAL just sent out a national action alert urging their members to call their Representative and demand that the bill is not brought to the floor of the House.”

During the press conference, in response to a reporter’s question, Pelosi was upset to be asked about the gruesome abortions and intanticides done by Kermit Gosnell and indicated she opposes a bill a committee approved yesterday to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Pelosi falsely called the bill a ban on all abortions.

“They would make it a federal law that there would be no abortion in our country,” Pelosi said.
