A California man who killed his pregnant girlfriend has been sentenced to 19 years and eight months to life in prison.

Lee Martin Konnerth, 37, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend and her unborn child. Sarah Lynn Burr died after being stabbed in the back while trying to flee the couples’ home during a violent argument.

Their relationship was described by Assistant District Attorney Jeff Wilsonas as “volatile.” Apparently, there was a history of domestic violence. On May 15, 2011, the two were engaged in an argument in the couple’s home. Burr allegedly grabbed a knife, prompting Konnerth to do the same.

She and her unborn child died before help could arrive.

Konnerth pleaded guilty to two second-degree murder charges. The article on the ABC website describes the unborn victim as a “fetus,” but in this case, the death of the baby was legally considered murder rather than a routine abortion. Had an abortionist kill the baby, it would’ve been business as usual.

Murder is the leading cause of death among pregnant women.(1) Often the violence is perpetrated by the woman’s partner or ex-partner, the father of her unborn child.
