Millions of Americans are participating in Religious Freedom Action Day today and delivering a message to Congress that it needs to pass legislation to protect the rights of those who refuse to obey the HHS mandate.

The mandate, a part of Obamacare, compels any pro-life groups group or business to pay for birth control and drugs that may cause abortions.

A coalition of pro-life advocates put together and are promoting Religious Freedom Action Day, including Eric Scheidler of the Pro-Life Action League, which sponsored rallies across the country last year.

“Do you want to be a part of this MASSIVE effort to WAKE UP Congress on this critical issue? Here’s what to do,” he said. “Between 10 a.m. and noon EST, call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and tell your Congressman: “Please CO-SPONSOR H.R. 940, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act, and ensure it comes to a vote before July 4.”

“The Conscience Rights Act is designed to protect our medical professionals and business owners from the pernicious HHS Mandate we’ve been fighting so hard over the past year,” he added in an email to LifeNews. “When you call, you will be one of MILLIONS pushing this urgent issue back into the forefront of our Representatives minds. But it’s crucial that we all call at the same time — from 10 a.m. to noon Eastern time TODAY – to overwhelm Congress with a clear picture of our strength and determination.”

The event is so big that former presidential candidate Rick Santorum is promoting it as well.

“Can you spare a few minutes today to defend your constitutional right to religious freedom – specifically when it comes to protecting life?” he asks in an email to his supporters.

“It is critical we stand up together on this matter.  Why?  I know we are facing so many other critical issues right now – the aftermath of the tragic terror attack in Boston; the unanswered questions surrounding the attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya; our economic challenges – but protecting our religious freedom is at the foundation of what makes this country great,” Santorum said.

“Congress isn’t doing enough to protect conscience rights, because they aren’t hearing from us enough that this issue matters.  That’s why calling today will help put this issue front and center for them,” he added. “Today people of faith are being forced to act against their beliefs. Nurses, medical students, and other health care workers should not be threatened by the government, or entities receiving federal funds, when it comes to matters related to abortion or other services to which they may be conscientious objectors.”

“Think about the nurse or doctor who must help with an abortion or face losing his job,” Santorum continued. “This legislation should be easy to pass – how can Congress vote against such a basic constitutional right?   But Congress needs to hear from you before it will take any action.”

Call the Capitol switchboard now at 202-224-3121, and ask for your representative by name. Ask your Member of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 940, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act – and to make sure it comes to a vote before July 4.
