A new undercover video released today shows late-term abortion practitioner LeRoy Carhart lying to a potential abortion patient. During the exchange with the patient, Carhart lies about how a woman he killed in a legal abortion died.

Jennifer McKenna Morbelli, a 29-year-old woman from New Rochelle, New York died from a botched 33-week abortion on February 7, 2013. The medical examiner’s office confirmed a botched 33-week abortion killed the young woman.

Live Action sent two women, pregnant at 22 and 24 weeks into Carhart’s Bellevue facility for interviews about how Carhart does late term abortions. Carhart tells the Live Action investigator that one of his patients died of complications in the pregnancy rather than from the abortion:

We have had one woman die in the clinic, OK?… She was a lot farther along than you, but the coroner, it was reported to the coroner and everything, and they said, “yeah, she died again of complications with the pregnancy, but not from the abortion.” Everything from the abortion went fine.

It has since been confirmed that Jennifer Morbelli died due to complications in the abortion procedure performed by LeRoy Carhart.

“Our investigation reveals that the horrors of the abortion industry leaves devastated two victims: the mother and the child,” says Lila Rose of Live Action, which released the video today. She added:

Carhart blatantly lied to both our investigators about the danger of his abortions, coercing his patients into a risky procedure. “I’ve never had to send anybody to the hospital.” Less than a year before, his staff were forced to call 911 after he injured a woman in an abortion. Our second investigator asked Carhart if she should call an ambulance if she goes into labor in her hotel room. With callous disregard for her safety, Carhart replied, “…don’t call 911… you’re gonna be within 10 minutes or 15 minutes of a clinic, just get in the car. Call me.”

Just six weeks earlier, he had ignored his patient Jennifer Morbelli’s attempts to contact him before she went into cardiac arrest and died at the local hospital. More injuries probably remain undocumented, as Carhart instructs his patients, “If you feel that something is wrong and you need to be seen do not go to the ER, call and we will meet you at the clinic.” He would rather endanger his patients than reveal his malpractice to emergency physicians. Carhart also told our investigator, “[T]he risks at… 36 weeks doing an abortion are still about less than 10% what they are with childbirth.” Actually, abortions after 20 weeks result in 6 times more maternal deaths than childbirth.

Rose also called on local health and law enforcement officials to investigate and put an end to gruesome practices that endanger women and children.

Julie Schmit-Albin, Executive Director of Nebraska Right to Life, in the state Carhart once did abortions before switching to a Maryland abortion business, is upset by the video.

She told LifeNews today that the video clearly shows Carhart maintains that while there was one death of a woman in his Maryland facility, the authorities determined she died as a result of complications from her pregnancy, when in reality, the Maryland state investigation is still on-going in determining the cause of Jennifer Morbelli’s death while undergoing an abortion at 33 weeks gestation.

In May, 2012, a 911 call from Carhart’s Bellevue facility ended up with the transport of a woman to a local hospital, despite his saying that he has never sent anyone to the hospital, she added.

“We would like to know where the Attorney General Jon Bruning is at with his office’s investigation into the May, 2012 incident where Operation Rescue claimed the woman being sent to the hospital was beyond 20 weeks gestation, from observations made at the abortion facility by eyewitnesses. Such an abortion would be in violation of Nebraska’s ban on abortions at 20 weeks based upon fetal pain,” Schmit-Albin said.

Carhart mentions in the Live Action video that he can’t do late term abortions in Nebraska but he can do them in Maryland.

“Carhart is one of the most notorious late term abortionists in the country,” said Schmit-Albin. “We believe every effort should be made to ascertain that he is not violating our late term abortion ban or other laws. To our knowledge, the Nebraska Department of Health does not conduct routine checks of either Planned Parenthood of the Heartland’s abortion facilities in Omaha and Lincoln or Carhart’s facility, unless a complaint is filed.”
