A 52-year-old Missourian man is being charged with manslaughter in the death of a 19-week-old unborn baby after he allegedly caused a three vehicle car crash.
Paul Joseph Murphy, a resident of St. Charles County, was involved in the accident on March 16. According to a press release from Prosecutor Tim Lohmar’s office, he had been seen driving erratically, ig
noring traffic lights and driving on the wrong side of the road. His car struck a Toyota carrying Nathan Hart, 24, Natalie Hart, 3, and Renee Ferrier, 22, who was pregnant. All three were seriously injured and were taken to hospitals. The driver of the third vehicle was not harmed.
At the hospital, Ferrier suffered a miscarriage. The baby was born with no signs of life.
Murphy, who was injured in the crash as well, was found to have been under the influence of benzodiazepines, a class of drugs that are sometimes used to treat anxiety but, in high doses, are used for sedation before surgical procedures. Valium and Xanax are two drugs in this category. The exact benzodiazepine that Murphy was taking has not been reported, but any drug in this class can cause dizziness, sedation, and disorientation.

In addition to the manslaughter charge, Murphy is also facing three counts of assault in the second degree, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting in physical injury. His bail has been set at $50,000. The charges could bring a maximum of 36 years in prison.
The manslaughter charge given for killing the unborn child was first-degree involuntary manslaughter. This is the same charge that Murphy would’ve faced if he had killed an adult.
