North Carolina Pushes Planned Parenthood Sex-Ed Program on Kids

If you think by abstaining from teaching about sex within a moral framework that Planned Parenthood is not teaching a definite belief system to children, think again.

ETR Associates—a sex program clearinghouse and offshoot of Planned Parenthood of Santa Cruz—admits on its webpage that a program being taught in North Carolina schools and elsewhere across the nation teaches toward four major “outcome expectancies or behavioral beliefs.” Belief number 4 is described in the ETR overview as “Hedonistic Beliefs.” Hedonistic philosophy places pleasure above everything else—as the greatest good.

For more than 13 years, North Carolina mandated that its schools teach abstinence until marriage as a part of its health curriculum.

But the ACLU and Planned Parenthood of North Carolina decided, in their infinite wisdom, that North Carolina kids needed “more.” Characterizing abstinence until marriage education as a deceptive, harmful thing, a 2009 ACLU blog entry says, “For 13 years, many of NC’s young people have received inaccurate information in a context that engendered fear and used shame to discourage sexual activity instead of providing information and educating young people about healthy relationships and healthy decision-making.”

Having had enough of schools teaching kids to abstain from sex, the ACLU and Planned Parenthood of North Carolina formed a coalition with NC NARAL, Equality NC, the Pediatric Society, Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign, and “many others,” to force comprehensive sexuality health education into every public school in the state. Their vehicle of choice for doing so was the North Carolina Healthy Youth Act.

As a result of that Act, middle school children are no longer protected against Planned Parenthood’s hedonistic philosophy and the smut that is used to propagate it. On the contrary, according to local news reports, children in the Lenoir County School District are the first in the state to be faced with the abysmal program known as Making Proud Choices.

Making Proud Choices is the typical Planned Parenthood fare. “We just want to let kids know that they do have an option. They have a choice. To give kids the confidence to either say no they don’t want to do this, or if they do choose to have sexual relationships, they can have the confidence to be safe when they do it so that we don’t have unintended pregnancies or STDs,” said health and P.E. instructor Trenton Lovekamp in the WITN news report. What he fails to mention is that the curriculum has a component that teaches children that sex is “fun and pleasurable when a condom is used and [students] are taught how to incorporate this belief into role-play scenarios.”

The program purports to prevent STDs and pregnancies by hands-on practice with condoms and a penis model. According to a report published on the Department of Health and Human Services website, the key theme of one of the modules is the notion “that participants can protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases by correctly using condoms every time they have sex.” Another module teaches children that they can protect themselves against pregnancy and STDs by using condoms and contraception when they have sex.

The module entitled “Developing Condom Use Skills and Negotiation Skills” teaches children “negotiation skills to address partner pressure as well as ways to make condoms pleasurable.” One must wonder how in the world instruction in how to make condoms pleasurable is going to lead to less sex among these young people. Oh, it’s not! That’s the idea, obviously.

The program is long on role-playing. Small group activities and visual data abound.

Program facilitators are “well trained” and must sign a statement of fidelity to the curriculum. The program may be delivered, according to the HHS report, to mixed gender groups. Peer educators are allowed.

The study on the HHS website found that three months after the program those participants who were “sexually experienced” when the program began were “significantly less likely [now there’s a statistic you can nail your jello to!] to report having had unprotected sexual intercourse in the previous three months, and reported a lower frequency of unprotected sexual intercourse. Program impacts on unprotected sexual intercourse were not statistically significant for youth who were sexually inexperienced at baseline.” At six months and a year after the program, findings were similar.

Which begs the question: Why are all these children being exposed to graphic, hedonistic sexual instruction when a very small percentage of eighth graders will have engaged in sexual intercourse before the course begins, and the program supposedly does not significantly impact those who are not sexually active when it begins? And are we really to believe that children exposed to such graphic, hands-on sex instruction and role-playing are not encouraged to become sexually active by participating?

According to the report, the impact of the program on attitudes about abstinence “were not considered for the review because they fell outside the scope of the review.”

North Carolina parents must act immediately to fight this program. Other interested citizens have a right and duty to fight it, as well. Parents are encouraged to begin contacting their school districts to find out whether this program is in place and to opt their children out of the program, as a stop-gap measure. Parents must go to the school and “camp out,” if necessary, to gain access to the curriculum. Concerned citizens must work together to completely rid the schools of these “evidence-based” programs that are nothing more than a tool for indoctrinating children in Planned Parenthood’s hedonistic philosophy. Jim Sedlak’s book Parent Power!! is available here for download, and contains invaluable, step-by-step information on how to get these programs out of schools.

Concerned citizens in Lenoir County have already begun contacting STOPP. Please let us know if you are willing to engage in this fight in North Carolina, and we will put you in touch with others who are ready to get the ball rolling. E-mail us at [email protected].

Planned Parenthood of North Carolina is now known as Planned Parenthood Health Systems, Inc. It operates facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
