A Houston, Texas woman who reportedly took pills to cause a self-induced abortion placed the body of the 5-month-old unborn baby in a trash can.

Police have found the body of the unborn baby the unnamed woman discarded in the trash can of her southwest Houston home. Authorities searched the home after relatives notified them of the self-abortion. The woman’s family had no idea she was pregnant and the woman apparently recently moved into the home and hid the pregnancy from her family.

Officials will perform an autopsy to determine if the baby was alive at birth.

According to the Houston Chronicle newspaper:

Police had been searching for the 5-month-old fetus after the woman told them she took pills in an effort to give herself an abortion Tuesday morning.

The 29-year-old woman said the incident occurred in a bedroom of her family home in the 12300 block of Tambourine near Keegan, said Sgt. James Racus of the Houston Police Department Homicide Division.

Racus said the woman, whose name has not been released, told authorities she had taken pills to induce the abortion. When the fetus came out she wrapped it in a blanket and put it in a trash can at the home.

Racus said the woman was bleeding heavily after the incident and went to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. She told a nurse what had happened and the nurse called police.

Doctors at the hospital estimated the woman had been between about 20 and 25 weeks pregnant, Racus said. He said she had lost a lot of blood, but was conscious and talking. She is expected to recover, he added, but she was very distraught.

She told authorities, Racus said, she had wanted the abortion because she couldn’t afford to care for a child.

“You can have an abortion,” Racus said. “But performing an abortion on yourself–you can die.”

Legalizing abortion was supposed to rid the country of these kinds of self-abortion cases, but clearly that is not the case.
