I previously wrote about the death of Jennifer Morbelli. The question must be asked: Is the administration of Governor Martin O’Malley partly responsible for her death?
Based on the various accounts, Morbelli was 33 weeks pregnant when she died this past Thursday at Shady Grove Hospital in the DC suburbs of Maryland. Morbelli was a married kindergarten teacher from New Rochelle, New York.
She had set a baby registry up that is still online and her obituary indicates she had already named her unborn baby girl Madison Leigh. Jill Stanek reports that the decision to have an abortion apparently came in the past two weeks after learning of “fetal anomalies.”
According to Stanek, the process started last Sunday, which is a normal procedure for late term abortions at the facility. The family returned to the facility Wednesday and was there for nine hours, after which LeRoy Carhart and his wife both left to go out of state to perform abortions the next day in either Indiana or Nebraska.
Thursday morning, Morbelli’s family took her to Shady Grove Hospital and reported that they’d been unable to get through to Carhart. By 10 a.m., she was dead. Carhart called in via telephone but never showed up.
Troy Newman of Operation Rescue was quoted as saying:
“This is a case of not only shoddy practices, but patient abandonment that we believe rises to the level of criminal conduct. We will press for criminal charges in this case, in addition to Board discipline.”
Under Governor Martin O’Malley, Carhart was granted a license to perform abortions in Maryland despite his track record and despite lies on his application to the medical board (these are pointed out below.)

In Nebraska, a non-disciplinary agreement was made with Nebraska authorities where Carhart agreed to stop falsifying medical records, falling asleep during abortions, and interrupting abortions to take personal phone calls. Some of the shoddy abortion practices resulted in numerous emergency hospitalizations and at least one patient died from a late-term abortion at Carhart’s hands,
What is Governor O’Malley going to do about it now? Will we see anything done at all by the Governor or the Democrats controlling the legislature to stop Maryland fromremaining a place where dangerous late-term abortions take place and draw women from out of state?

Stanek points out that Carhart’s clinic had just received a license from the state of Maryland the day before Morbelli’s death:
It is not known whether the State of Maryland will close down Carhart’s mill, pending investigations. Ironically, the state enacted abortion clinic regulations that went into effect in November 2012. But on the day before Morbelli died, the state licensed 17 abortion clinics, including Carhart’s, without ever inspecting them.
Some information on Carhart’s omissions and false claims made in his application for a Maryland license:
Carhart misrepresented his practice on his Maryland medical license application when he indicated he was an emergency room physician and university professor. In reality, Carhart has not had an affiliation with a hospital since 1987, and was stripped of any formal duties with the University of Nebraska in the late 1990s.
Carhart’s Maryland application omits his decades of job history as owner and abortionist at the Abortion and Contraceptive Clinic in Bellevue, Nebraska, and 12 years of employment at Women’s Health Care Services in Wichita, Kansas, where he specialized in late-term abortions.
Carhart conducts risky late-term abortions in Maryland without hospital privileges.
Carhart has a history of involvement in multiple botched late-term abortions during his employment in Kansas, including the third trimester death of 19-year old Christin Gilbert.
Carhart also remains under criminal investigation by the Nebraska Attorney General’s office based on a complaint filed by Operation Rescue and local pro-life groups that contained several affidavits from former Carhart employees making allegations of illegal activity at his Bellevue, Nebraska, clinic.

Information on Maryland’s laws:
Maryland provides virtually no protection for women and minors seeking abortion. It does not have an informed consent law, and its parental notice law contains a loophole that eviscerates the protection this requirement typically provides. It also allows and funds destructive embryo research.
Some other notable facts about Maryland law include: a Freedom of Choice Act which would ensure legal abortion with little restriction even after a possible overturning of Roe v. Wade, taxpayer funded abortions for women on public assistance, and no requirement for physicians to provide appropriate medical care to an infant who survives an abortion.
