Time for New York to Stop Propping Up Child Sex, Abortion

Imagine this: A mother hands her 14 year old daughter a signed permission slip for next week’s field trip as she drops her off at school. That afternoon, she is called to grant permission for her child to be given ibuprofen and, then later, to come in to sign her out of school because of severe cramps.

While a parent’s consent is required for small day-to-day goings on at the school, she is kept in the dark about one very important thing. Little does this mother know that the reason her daughter is feeling so sick is because the school gave her Plan B, the morning after pill, side effects of which include, but are not limited to: lower abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, headache, and dizziness. This mother has no idea but is left to deal with the consequences.

This situation is happening to thousands of parents in New York City. Last week, the New York Post reported that the number of doses of Plan B being given out in city schools more than doubled from 5,039 in the 2009-2010 school year to 12,721 in 2011-2012, far higher than previously reported. Parents aren’t being told anything about the drugs – including birth-control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), hormone-delivering injections and devices – being put into their young daughters’ bodies in schools because according to New York state law, children don’t need parental consent or notification.

Mona Davids, president of the NYC Parents Union, and parent of a 14-year-old, is outraged at Mayor Bloomberg’s push to increase birth control in schools:

“I’m in shock,” she said. “What gives the mayor the right to decide, without adequate notice, to give our children drugs that will impact their bodies and their psyches? He has purposely kept the public and parents in the dark with his agenda.”

Davids, who is black, noted that most school-based health centers are in poor neighborhoods.

“This was population control on blacks and Latinos without our knowledge,” she said.

Not only is the NYC government targeting blacks and Hispanics, they are also targeting children to lure them into a culture of dependency on birth control and abortion.

Science and statistics reveal the sad truth of this deceit. Statistics have proven that as the birth control rate has climbed for our nation, so has our abortion rate. And science has proven that introducing hormonal chemicals into a child’s body and conditioning them to continue their use throughout their child bearing years leads to serious short and long term consequences. Just ask the World Health Organization, which has labeled the birth control pill as a Group I carcinogen – that’s the highest possible ranking; cigarettes are also in Group I.

One only has to read the inserts that come with chemical contraception, listen to commercials for hormonal birth control that spew out a long list of side effects, including life threatening blood clots and stroke, or glance at Facebook ads calling for women who took Yaz birth control pills to contact a law firm to join the group lawsuit, to grasp the unbelievable amount of life-altering consequences of imbibing hormonal birth control.

Yet, parents aren’t even being told, let alone asked for permission.

Contraception is a quick fix that doesn’t address the root of the problem, just like abortion.

WHY are young girls asking for birth control or the morning after pill? Why are they having sex ? Are they being pressured by boys at school, sexually abused, or statutorily raped? The age of consent in New York is 17, children seeking birth control and abortifacient drugs younger than that age should raise huge red flags.

How much counseling do these girls get? Are these in-school clinics doing anything about it or are they just handing out birth control and inserting IUDs into their bodies, no questions asked, then sending kids back to math class? If it’s anything like Planned Parenthood, they don’t provide comprehensive information about the risks or proper follow up. Obviously, parents aren’t being informed, so they can’t give the support and guidance young girls need to make the right decisions.

Some people will argue that the health risks to these young girls are worth it if it will prevent unintended pregnancies. They think that giving girls birth control pills will reduce abortions, but contraception does NOT lower abortion rates. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 54% of women who have abortions used contraception during the month they became pregnant (And really, how many teenage girls are responsible enough to remember to take the Pill at the same time every day?). New York City has the highest abortion rate in the country with over 40% of pregnancies ending in abortion, and teen pregnancies there result in abortion an astounding 63% of the time.

Clearly, New York City’s policies are not working and are instead hurting young girls, parents, and pre-born babies with devastating consequences.
