Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican who some say is one of the leading potential GOP presidential candidates for 2016, today blasted abortion and Roe v. Wade. He issued the following statement regarding the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision:

“Today marks the tragic anniversary of one of America’s most blatant instances of judicial activism that paved the way for the destruction of innocent unborn life. Since this decision, tens of millions of our nation’s unborn babies have been denied the chance to celebrate a birthday, begin kindergarten or go on to contribute their God-given talents to our world.

“As a U.S. senator, I am privileged to serve in a position that allows me to fight for the lives of the unborn. I will continue to fulfill my duty to fight to reduce the number of abortions. As with many of our nation’s most important debates, the battlefield of this issue is in the hearts and minds of the American electorate, and I pray that we can one day live in a society that fully cherishes every life from conception until death.”

Earlier, when asked about when life begins, in a Politico interview, Rubio said:

“At conception. And I think science has established that definitively as well. When a human egg becomes a human embryo that is a human life, it can’t become anything other than a human being. I wish there were more folks in this town who were deeply committed to science and belief in science would not ignore that scientific fact.”

The pro-life women’s group Susan B. Anthony List has applauded Rubio for standing up for human life.

“He is a principled leader, an effective communicator, and a great motivator at a time when the pro-life movement – and America – is so hungry for all three,” SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser has said. “Senator Rubio’s response reminds us in the pro-life movement that not only is every unborn human life a unique, unrepeatable gift from God from the moment of conception, but that our belief that Life begins at conception is backed by science.”

“And more importantly, Senator Rubio not only talks about his deeply-held pro-life convictions, he acts on them, despite stiff resistance from Senate Democrats like Harry Reid who hold power in the upper chamber. He led the fight early last year to restore religious liberty, and even more recently fought against any expansion of abortion rights in the U.N. Disabilities Treaty. He’s proudly co-sponsored other key pieces of pro-life legislation, and co-chairs the U.S. Senate Values Action Team,” she said.
