Tell Harry Reid: You Can’t Break the Rules to Change the Rules

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is trying to change the Senate rules that have historically protected the minority party from the majority running rough-shod over them.

You see, the Senate has in place a filibuster rule that requires 60 Senators to agree to hold a final vote for passage of a bill. Harry Reid has not been allowing Republicans to offer amendments and input on his legislation, so they haven’t always agreed to votes on his bills – and Reid doesn’t like that one bit.

So far, Republicans have been able to successfully thwart some of his disastrous agenda, so Harry Reid wants to change the rules –  by lowering the filibuster threshold from 60 votes to 51 – and he wants to do this by breaking the rules! The rule change to the filibuster that Reid wants is supposed to require 67, but astoundingly Reid wants to flout this standard and declare that a simple majority of 51 would suffice to change it! This strategy is so extreme and so antithetical to the rules and spirit of the Senate that it is known as the “nuclear option.”

If Harry Reid indeed goes nuclear and rams this filibuster rule change through, it could have devastating effects on our pro-life agenda. It means Senator Reid only needs the support of 51 of the 55 Democrats in his caucus to:

*Confirm radical pro-abortion judges at all levels, including the Supreme Court
*Pass the Freedom of Choice Act
*Overturn essential pro-life laws like the Hyde Amendment

We want to tell Senator Reid, “You can’t break the rules to change the rules!” The best way to do this is to put the pressure on your Senators to not support the nuclear option and acquiesce to this blatant violation of the rules.

The vote is taking place on January 22nd (how appropriate that another injustice may occur on the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade) so please call your Senators at 202-224-3121 or contact them online RIGHT NOW to tell them you oppose this filibuster rule change!
