Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, announced on the Today Show she and husband Henry are expecting a baby.

The child is the first grandchild for the former commander-in-chief. During a phone call on the show, Bush said he’s “fired up” about becoming a grandfather, and former first lady Laura Bush said she’s “thrilled.”

It has been no secret that the former president and first lady were looking forward to grandchildren. Last year, Jenna told People, “I don’t have any children. I just have a cat, to my parents’ dismay.”

Jenna further told the magazine, “My dad saw my husband’s boss at a conference, and he said to stop paying my husband until we produce children.”

In a far cry from its usual attempts to dehumanize unborn children, the media has accurately described the Bush family’s unborn member as a baby. Yet as we celebrate this precious new addition to the Bush family, there are unborn babies the same age or even older, which have no protection under the law and are vulnerable to abortion.

While in office, President Bush was a great friend to the pro-life movement. He signed into law several important pieces of pro-life legislation including the historic Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. He also reinstated the pro-life Mexico City policy, limited federal funding for embryo-destructive research and appointed two justices to the US Supreme Court who have voted to uphold limits on abortion.

Bush detailed his pro-life journey in his 2010 autobiography Decision Points. In the book, Bush describes a poignant experience aiding his mother who suffered a miscarriage in the mid-1960’s. With Bush’s father out of town, a teenage George W. Bush drove his mother Barbara to the emergency room. During the ordeal, Bush saw the remains of the child. He writes, “I remember thinking: There was a human life, a little brother or sister.”

The autobiography focuses on key decisions made during his presidency. Among those, he recalls his executive order limiting embryo-destructive research. Bush ultimately came to the conclusion of the pro-life movement, writing that the “science was unproven, the morality was in doubt and ethical alternatives existed.”

“I did feel a responsibility to voice my pro-life convictions and lead the country toward what Pope John Paul II called a culture of life,” Bush said.

The pro-life movement remains grateful for President Bush’s leadership and wishes the entire Bush family heartfelt congratulations on this new blessing in their lives. We look forward to the day when all unborn children are welcomed into this world and protected under law.
