Planned Parenthood Affiliate Quits, Mandated to Perform Abortions

Planned Parenthood of South Central New York based in the New York cities of Binghamton and Oneonta has quit its affiliation with the national Planned Parenthood abortion business because it mandates that its chapters do abortions.

Preferring to focus on family planning efforts, the chapter is breaking off of Planned Parenthood and renaming itself — preferring not to submit itself to a mandate that all chapters have clinics that do abortions that Planned Parenthood wants in place next year.

Planned Parenthood of South Central New York will become the Family Planning Center of South Central New York starting early next year.  CEO Debra Marcus told local news agencies that abortions are already available in the area.

“There’s no need for us to be duplicating services that are already adequately and well provided locally,” Marcus said.

The abortion giant responded to the news in a statement attempting to play down losing one of its local affiliates.

Planned Parenthood vice president for communications Eric Ferrero said, “In recent years men, women and teens in communities across New York and nationwide have increasingly relied on Planned Parenthood for a wide range of core services, from well-woman exams to lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings. In response to these patient needs, Planned Parenthood affiliate leaders decided to offer a consistent set of services at all health centers so that patients can receive essential care wherever they live.”

“Within the next couple of years, abortion services will be available in at least one health center per Planned Parenthood affiliate, though not at every health center,” he said.

The Susan B. Anthony List, a pro-life women’s group, emailed LifeNews about the decision.

“Planned Parenthood’s mandate requiring that all affiliates provide abortions beginning in 2013 is the ultimate evidence that Planned Parenthood’s chief concern is making money off abortion – not the health of vulnerable women and girls,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.

“Planned Parenthood of South Central New York is the latest affiliate to become independent because it won’t comply with the rule. This mandate will no doubt result in an increase in revenue for Planned Parenthood as well as an increase in the more than 329,000 lives the abortion chain ends in one year. Does that sound like women’s health?” she asked.

In 2011, two Texas affiliates went independent after refusing to comply with Planned Parenthood’s corporate abortion mandate. One former Planned Parenthood employee said, “In state after state, you’ve seen that brand of Planned Parenthood used as synonymous with abortion services. And that’s the great sadness in all of this.” Similarly, former manager of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Storm Lake, Iowa, Sue Thayer, was fired after she questioned her affiliate bosses for mandating that her clinic provide “webcam abortions.”

Thayer is now suing Planned Parenthood for potential Medicaid waste, fraud, and abuse.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion business, performing 329,445 abortions in 2010 alone. In 2010, abortions made up 91 percent of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy services, while prenatal care and adoption referrals accounted for only 8.6 percent (31,098) and 0.2 percent (841), respectively.  For every adoption referral, Planned Parenthood performed 392 abortions.
