Obama: No Track Record to Run on Except Support for Abortion

Opinion

“[I]f you don’t have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare voters. If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from. You make a big election about small things.” — Then candidate Barack Obama, speaking at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

All through this campaign, supporters of Mitt Romney have gleefully (and properly) turned that middle sentence back against President Obama. They note that the overwhelming bulk of his political ads have torched Romney in the hopes that attention to Obama’s own record of utter failure would be consumed in the process.

And is it possible to exaggerate how much the President and his re-election campaign have relied on scare tactics? I don’t think so, nor do I think it would be possible to exaggerate how faithfully the “mainstream media” has used Obama’s criticisms of Romney as talking points. They are not reporters, they are stenographers.

But to pro-life ears there is a great deal more to these three sentences than the usual laundry list of Obama failures. He DOES have a record in at least one area—abortion—in pursuit of which he has gone much more than the proverbial “extra mile.”

Obama’s embrace of abortion extends overseas and at home he is unconcerned about trampling on religious liberties—while the lives of 1.2 million unborn babies are extinguished each and every year.

Over at “Reason #51 to Defeat Barack Obama: 4 Million Dead,” we lay out the Obama record on abortion. Please read this summary carefully and pass it along using your social networks.

It’s not as if President Obama has been an innocent bystander while 4.8 million babies died. About ten minutes after taking office, he issued an executive order to rescind the pro-life “Mexico City Policy” which had been enforced by Republican presidents going back to Ronald Reagan. The effect was to open the door to hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. funding to private organizations that perform and promote abortion overseas.

If there was any misunderstanding of this President’s ideological commitment to advancing the abortion agenda abroad, Secretary of State Clinton openly proclaimed, at a 2009 House committee hearing, that “we are now an administration that will protect the rights of women, including their rights to reproductive health care,” that “reproductive health includes access to abortion,” and that the Administration intends to advocate for this right “anywhere in the world.”

Obama did his best to fortify the Supreme Court by appointing Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the High Court.

ObamaCare will greatly expand the number of people in plans that cover abortion.

And that’s just the beginning. Obama opposed this year’s congressional ban on sex-selection abortions and has weakened conscience protections for medical personnel.

His unyielding commitment to Planned Parenthood–the organization that does more than 330,000 abortions each year—is so complete that Obama indicated in 2011 that he would block enactment of the government-wide funding bill–forcing a government shutdown–rather than agree to the House position that funding to Planned Parenthood should be curtailed.

The point is a simple one but of overwhelming importance. This President has a lengthy record of support to advance the abortion agenda in multiple ways both at home and aboard. And he is proud of it.

If he wins a second term, he won’t even have to pretend he is searching for “common ground.”
