The “War on Women” rhetoric from Planned Parenthood and President Barack Obama is failing, as new polling data show Mitt Romney is gaining with women voters as he challenges the pro-abortion president.
Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee released new polling numbers to LifeNews today from key battleground states which show the women’s vote is down to the wire in the presidential race.
The poll, conducted by American Viewpoint on October 4 and October 6-8 in Colorado, North Carolina, and Virginia, found Gov. Mitt Romney is gaining ground on President Barack Obama with women voters. The results show Romney is competitive with women, down just 43%-50%, after trailing Obama by double digits in previous weeks.
CWA president Penny Nance told LifeNews the results validate the Pew Research poll released on October 8, after the first presidential debate, showing Romney closing an 18-point deficit with women in September by tying Obama 47%-47%.
“While Democrats traditionally win the woman vote, this poll is a clear indication that Mitt Romney is closing the gender gap,” Nance said. “The survey results reflect what we’ve been saying for months; women are not monolithic voters, women are concerned about the economy, jobs, and foreign policy and not simply who is handing out free birth control.”
“Those on the Left claim there is a Republican ‘war on women,’ but clearly women are not buying it,” Nance said. “Women of this country are looking for a leader who will lead us out of our current economic turmoil and keep us safe abroad. Women are looking for leadership that we currently don’t have.”

Key findings of the American Viewpoint poll:
- Women say their personal financial situation has worsened over the past four years (25% better – 36% worse – 37% about the same).
- Romney wins with voters who say their personal financial situation is worse off (83%-8%).
- Nearly half (49%) of women say the federal government’s spending has hurt the economy.
- About a quarter of those surveyed (28%) say that federal government spending has helped.
- Of the 49% who state federal spending has hurt the economy, Romney wins (78%-15%).Women believe Romney will handle the issue of spending and debt better than Obama (49% – 44%).
The CWALAC poll finds women are most concerned about how Obama’s policies are adding to the national debt and have been unable to get Americans back to work. The survey revealed some of the most troubling economic aspects of the Obama record and showed that women were likely to vote against Obama due to the increasing national debt and high unemployment.
- 47% found it very convincing the national debt has increased by 51 percent over the past four years, standing now at 16 trillion dollars.
- 46% found it very convincing the national debt per person has grown from 34,000 to more than 50,000 dollars.
- 45% found it very convincing that 23 million Americans are either unemployed, underemployed, or have given up looking for work.
The CWALAC poll was conducted with 1,200 likely women voters in Colorado, North Carolina, and Virginia. Margin of error is +/- 4.9%.
