Activist Working to Turn Out 17 Million Evangelical Voters

Faith and Freedom Coalition founder, Ralph Reed, the former head of the Christian Coalition, is working feverishly to turnout 17 million evangelical voters this election. With targeted phone calls and mailings, as well as Christian Coalition-style voter guides, Reed thinks these voters will make a difference in defeating pro-abortion President Barack Obama.

Reed talked with David Brody, the Chief Political Correspondent for CBN News, about the endeavor:

Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition has now begun dropping their presidential voter guide into key battleground states. It has just posted to their site and you can check it out here:

They are sending this out to the roughly 17 million socially conservatives that they have identified in their extensive voter file. It is being delivered by mail and by text message. When people receive the voting guide in the mail, they can scan the barcode into their smart phone where a video begins to play that sums up the candidates positions on the issues.

To give you an idea of just how massive an effort this is, the Faith and Freedom Coalition will mail about 2 million voter guides in some of the key battleground states. When Ralph Reed was with the Christian Coalition in the 1990’s, they might send out 200,000 pieces of mail in each state. Reed tells me that, “It’s the difference between a Model T and a Ferrari.”

Oh by the way, guess what? Reed’s group has the cell phone numbers of 13 million social conservative voters. President Obama’s campaign had 7 million cell phones in 2008. Not too shabby at all. The Faith and Freedom Coalition is locked and loaded, as they get ready to mobilize Teavangelical voters across the country. The question is will the Romney campaign do their part and have a strong ground game too?

Reed recently told Greta Van Susteren that strong evangelical presence in the “big four” battlegrounds — Florida, Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina — means conservative Christians will play a bigger role than ever in November.

“In every one of those states, Greta, we believe we’re going to be able to increase the evangelical turnout from the 2008 baseline by an average of about 7%, and when that happens, there are going to be a lot of shocked faces in a lot of newsrooms across America.”

The New York Times recently profiled Reed’s effort to turn out evangelical voters for Romney relying on sophisticated voter targeting.

In the coming weeks, he says, each of those 17.1 million registered voters in 15 key states will receive three phone calls and at least three pieces of mail.

Seven million of them will get e-mail and text messages. Two million will be visited by one of more than 5,000 volunteers. Over 25 million voter guides will be distributed in 117,000 churches.
