Mitt Romney has launched his first attack on President Barack Obama’s pro-abortion record with a new advertisement that blasts the president for his pro-abortion HHS mandate that pro-life groups strongly oppose.

The Romney campaign released a new coordinated television advertisement wit the Republican National Committee. The campaign said “President Obama has declared war on religion by forcing religious institutions to go against their faith. Mitt Romney will stand up and protect religious freedom whenever it is threatened.”

The script for the ad follows:

VOICEOVER: “Who shares your values?” “President Obama used his healthcare plan to declare war on religion, forcing religious institutions to go against their faith.”

VOICEOVER: “Mitt Romney believes that’s wrong.”

MITT ROMNEY: “[I]n 1979, a son of Poland, Pope John Paul II, spoke words that would bring down an empire….Be not afraid’…” “When religious freedom is threatened, who do you want to stand with?”

VIDEO TEXT: “Endorsed By Lech Walesa”

MITT ROMNEY: “I’m Mitt Romney and I approve this message.”

The ad is already drawing praise from pro-life circles — including Thomas Peters of Catholic Vote.

President Obama spent yesterday in Colorado, being introduced by pro-abortion activist (and Planned Parenthood’s favorite person) Sandra Fluke. During his campaign stop, the President made clear (once again) that he won’t back down on the HHS mandate,” he said. “Furthermore, the President falsely claimed that he has reached a compromise with Catholics and other faith leaders – revealing just how disingenuous his negotiations have become at this point.”

“How much more proof do we need to see that President Obama knows exactly what he is doing to pro-life, pro-religious liberty Catholics and other people of faith? What other evidence do we need to see to realize that, when it comes to religious freedom, Obama just doesn’t get it?” Peters asked. “I was happy to see that today Mitt Romney released a new ad entitled “Be Not Afraid” (quoting Blessed Pope John Paul II) where the theme is religious freedom.”

He concluded: “think Romney gets it. I know Obama doesn’t get it. So what are we waiting for? Let’s win it for the guy who gets it.”
