Planned Parenthood Prez Still Misleads About Doing Mammograms

Media reports yesterday focused on a Planned Parenthood announcement indicating funding it has received from Komen will allow it to perform more breast screenings for women — like the kind they can get at legitimate medical centers without going to an abortion business.

The abortion giant yesterday announced it is expanding its breast health education, outreach, and services across the country.

“The expansion is made possible by an outpouring of donations from the public after Susan G. Komen for the Cure stopped providing grants to Planned Parenthood because of intense pressure from political groups and then quickly reversed course earlier this year,” it said. “The expanded program Planned Parenthood announced today will give more women access to lifesaving cancer screenings, diagnostic services, and educational resources to help them identify potential breast health issues early, and make the best decisions about their health care.”

That’s all fine and good, but Veronika Johannsen of Live Action notes that the abortion company still won’t provide mammograms for women, because it has no such mammogram machines on site and merely takes Komen’s funds and refers women to legitimate health centers that do.

“Planned Parenthood is now claiming to correct its deficiencies in breast cancer screenings and truly help women by offering more extensive follow up care, such as mammograms,’ Johannsen says. “Yeah right.”

She continues:

Sarah Kliff of the Washington Post further quotes Richards, reporting: “Given the events of the last year, and the contributions that came in specifically around the conversation about breast health and our work with Komen, we felt it was important to use that money to expand access and education… We felt like we had a real opportunity here to do something new.”

But wait a minute…I thought Planned Parenthood already performed mammograms! If they have always done this, why is Richards now saying they are doing “something new“? After all, this is the very same Cecile Richards who appeared on the on the Joy Behar Show in 2011 and adamantly voiced her opposition to the bill threatening to defund Planned Parenthood, claiming that “[m]illions of women in this country are going to lose their health care access, not to abortion services – to basic family planning, m-m-you-know mammograms, cancer screenings, cervical cancer.”

Live Action investigated this claim and revealed that not a single Planned Parenthood in the entire United States of America provides mammograms for women. The only breast examinations Planned Parenthood performs are manual exams that any health care provider can teach you to do at home. If you were to need a mammogram, the only service Planned Parenthood could offer you is referrals for mammograms – not mammograms themselves. Even on Planned Parenthood’s own website, a YouTube video of Dr. Vanessa Cullins, vice president of external medical affairs for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, states: “We also help women get the care and treatment they need. Like most primary care physicians and OB/GYNs, Planned Parenthood refers patients to other facilities for mammograms.”

I don’t know what makes me cringe more – the fact that Cecile Richards has been caught red-handed by publicly lying about her corporation providing mammograms and people actually believing her, or the part when she says that Planned Parenthood is “an American value in this country.”

Planned Parenthood itself has admitted that it does not perform mammograms for women — something the Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity confirmed last year.

LifeNews.com and pro-life blogger Jill Stanek followed up with phone calls to various Planned Parenthood centers and confirmed they do not do mammograms.

Then, the organization Live Action released videotaped footage of calls to 30 Planned Parenthood centers nationwide in 27 different states where abortion facility staff were asked whether or not mammograms could be performed on site. Every one of the Planned Parenthood centers admitted they could not do mammograms. Every Planned Parenthood, without exception, tells the women calling that they will have to go elsewhere for a mammogram, and many clinics admit that no Planned Parenthood clinics provide this breast cancer screening procedure.
