Pro-Life Groups: Attacks on Akin Hide Obama, McCaskill’s Abortion Record

Two leading pro-life groups have chimed in on the debate surrounding Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin’s controversial remarks on abortion and rape. They said the response from pro-abortion President Barack Obama and Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill ides their extreme pro-abortion records.

Marjorie Dannenfelser of the Susan B. Anthony List told LifeNews in a statement, “Congressman Akin, a longtime pro-life leader, has said he had misspoken, and no one is arguing that rape is anything but a despicable, horrible crime.”

“Abortion supporters like Sen. Claire McCaskill are trying to use this issue as a smokescreen to hide from their radical, pro-abortion records that are out of step with the majority of Missourians and the American people,” Dannenfelser said. “On the issues of taxpayer funding of elective abortion in Obamacare, protection of unborn girls being targeted in the womb solely because of their gender, and whether children capable of feeling pain in the womb should be protected, President Obama and Senator McCaskill have been on the wrong side, showing that they favor abortion on-demand, for any reason, up to the moment of birth, subsidized by the taxpayers.”

“If President Obama and Senator McCaskill care to focus on extreme positions, it is time for self reflection.  It is time to answer the question why this president has recently rejected bans on gender selection and late term abortions,” Dannenfelser added. “Todd Akin, on the other hand, has a record of voting to protect human life.  His opponent does not.  Congressman Akin has been an excellent partner in the fight for the unborn.”

Meanwhile, Family Research Council Action PAC President Connie Mackey also sent a statement to LifeNews.

“This is another case of ‘gotcha politics’ against a conservative leader. Todd Akin has a long and distinguished record of defending women, children and families,” Mackey said. “He has fought against forcing taxpayers to subsidize abortion giant Planned Parenthood, which is the bedrock of Claire McCaskill’s base of support. When speaking about the issue of rape, let’s not forget the cover-up of statutory rape by Planned Parenthood, which to my knowledge has not been addressed by Senator McCaskill.”

“Throughout his twelve years in Congress, Todd Akin has supported legislation that honors all human life. He has opposed the commodification of women in contrast to his opponent, Claire McCaskill, who has a long record of promoting the abortion industry while ignoring how abortion harms women. We know Todd Akin, and FRC Action PAC enthusiastically endorses his candidacy,” Mackey concluded.
