Pro-Abortion Groups Silent on Forced Abortions, Chen Guangcheng

As the Associated Press and LifeNews.com reported earlier today, Chinese human rights activist Chen Guangcheng was reportedly pressured to leave the U.S. Embassy in China, where he had been seeking refuge, and accept a deal struck by the United States and the Chinese government.

Chen became a target of the Chinese government after repeatedly exposing the forced abortions and forced sterilizations taking place under the One Child Policy.

According to trusted sources of ChinaAid, the Chinese government had threatened to kill Chen’s wife and family members if Chen did not vacate the embassy and accept the deal. In 2006, Chen was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People for his activism.

The case of Chen Guangcheng has sparked international outcry.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney called on President Obama to ensure the Chinese government knows the United States stands with Chen in opposition to the One Child Policy and that the protection of Chen and his family are “an important priority for the United States and for the people of the world.”

However, there are some groups in the United States that remain conspicuously silent on the issue.

Groups like Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America and the National Organization for Women, which purport to support women’s rights have not uttered a word in defense of Chen or his activism on behalf of the women of China faced with the forced abortions of their children. In fact, last year a former Planned Parenthood director went as far as to praise China’s One Child Policy.  These pro-abortion groups have worked overtime in attempts of portraying pro-life legislative efforts as a “war on women.”

Yet, they have deliberately ignored the plight of Chinese women and girls, which constitutes an actual war on women and their families by the Chinese government.

Beyond just ignoring Chinese human rights abuses, Planned Parenthood has bolstered the oppressive programs of the Chinese government through the advocacy of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The UNFPA aids the Chinese government in carrying out the One Child Policy. Karen Pearl, interim president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America defended the indefensible in 2005 saying, “UNPFA provides lifesaving reproductive health services to women and men with no other health care options, those most vulnerable and in need, and the United States should contribute to these efforts-not work against them.”

In contrast, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has called for the United States to eliminate funding to the United Nations Population Fund. At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in 2012, Romney declared that as president, he would “cut off funding for the United Nations Population Fund, which supports China’s barbaric One Child Policy.”

Doug Johnson, Legislative Director for the National Right to Life Committee, praised the Bush Administration for cutting funding to the UNFPA in 2002: “The UNFPA is a cheerleader and facilitator for China’s birth-quota program, which relies heavily on coerced abortion. Top UNFPA officials have been completely cozy with China’s birth-quota bosses. For 20 years, top UNFPA leaders have consistently praised China’s program and attacked its critics.”

“In China, government officials continue to subject women and their families to crushing fines and employment sanctions, and even destroy their homes, for becoming pregnant without government permission,” said NRLC’s Johnson. “U.S. law prohibits funding an agency that in any way participates in such a coercive program.”
