Canadian Ads Tout Selecting a Baby’s Gender Before Birth

In some Canadian newspapers, ads are now running to inform would-be parents they can save themselves the hassle of creating the family they don’t want by choosing beforehand which gender child they would like to have.

Since there is, for all intents and purposes, “no law on abortion in [Canada],” the rule of thumb is that “anything goes.” And that includes a hoard of throw-away children and pre-implantation genetic diagnoses, or “selecting an embryo of known gender facilitating family balancing.”

In other words, if you want a girl, you get a girl, and if you want a boy, you get a boy. And if you want a boy but somehow get a girl, you can fall back on gender-selective abortion to fix that problem.

And though it frightens me to say it, this is still just the slippery slope—we have not hit rock bottom yet. After the legalization of abortion “to save the mother’s life” evolved into “abortion on demand” for myriad reasons, all too many people slowly grew calloused enough to support aborting handicapped children and then aborting children based on the gender preference of the parents.

Now, as we see today, abortion is just one of many—what are called—options a new couple can avail themselves of when planning what kind family they think they want.

In this setting, planning one’s family is much like buying a new car: You can choose all the options you want and scratch everything else off the list.

And in the middle of all these developments and all these family planning “opportunities,” news is breaking out of Pittsburgh about a little girl named Annie Clark who was born with no hands. Surely, concerned parents planning the “perfect” family would have aborted her long before she marred the family tree. But thanks be to God, Annie’s parents did not choose that route.

Last week, seven-year-old Annie won a National Penmanship Award. So great is her spirit and so endless her drive, she has learned to clasp the ends of her arms around a pencil or a pen to write—and write well.

Here are the sobering thoughts:  Who knows what great things the untold number of handicapped children who are being aborted this very second could have accomplished? And regarding the little girl who’s being aborted because the parents wanted a boy or the little boy who’s being aborted because he’s not a girl, who knows, in either situation, what wonderful achievements—and perhaps even what world changing intellects—are being snuffed out in the name of “choice.”
