In a case that highlights the brutality and depravity of sex-selection abortions in India, a new report shows how a man tied up and beat his wife to cause her third consecutive sex-selection abortion.

According to the Hindustan Times, a 30-year-old housewife is now struggling for her life after her husband and in-laws beat her repeatedly for a third abortion in a row because she was found to be carrying an unborn baby girl. Police official Shaikh Usman said the victim, named Munni, thought was carrying a girl baby because a local religious official predicted she would not carry a boy baby until her seventh pregnancy by her husband, who proceeded to tie her up and beat her in an attempt to induce a miscarriage.

As the newspaper reports:

As no local doctor was willing to abort the child for the third time due to her health condition, the family decided to do it themselves. Husband Allabaksh, father-in-law Rahman and mother-in-law Fathima tied her to a pole and beat her on the stomach under the impression it would lead to abortion.

The neighbors saw her bleeding profusely and took her to the government hospital. The incident came to light on Sunday after she was admitted to a private hospital at Mangalgiri following complications.

Police said that based on the complaint of the victim, the three accused had been arrested. Later they were produced in the local court and sent to jail.

Andhra Pradesh assembly speaker N. Manohar visited the hospital and asked the doctors to provide all necessary medicare to save her life.

The district collector V N Vishnu has ordered a probe into the incident. The probe would be conducted by the district medical and health officer Dr Gopi Naik.
