Ford Foundation’s Ties to Planned Parenthood Run Deep

Earlier this year I discussed some interesting ties between Planned Parenthood and the Rockefeller Foundation, and why came as no surprise the Foundation pushed to legalize abortion in Uruguay.  The Ford Foundation was another advocate for the decriminalization of abortion there as well, but this shouldn’t come as much of a shock, either.

The Ford Foundation prides itself on being advocates of global social justice, but judging from some of the organizations they support and donate large grants to, they’re certainly not living up to their mission statement.

As of May 2010, Planned Parenthood Federation of America president Cecile Richards has been an active member of the Ford Foundation’s Board of Trustees, meaning she has strong influence in monetary decisions the Foundation makes when it comes to grants given to other organizations.  The Foundation began donating grants to the abortion behemoth in 2007, when they granted a total of $559,220 to Planned Parenthood affiliates around the world— $159,220 went to research affiliates in China, and $400,000 to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

In 2008, the Ford Foundation more than doubled the grants from the previous year and granted a total of $1,237,741 to Planned Parenthood affiliates around the world, including $350,000 to Planned Parenthood of New York City, in a state where 40% of unborn children are aborted.

In 2009, a total of $1,260,000 was granted to Planned Parenthood affiliates world-wide, including $600,000 to the United States’ Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and in 2010 (Richards became a Ford Foundation Board of Trustees member in May of that year), a total of $1,235,000 was granted to Planned Parenthood affiliates globally, including $500,000 that was granted to Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles, in the state with the highest abortion rate in our country.

In 2011, though, the total grants from the Ford Foundation to global Planned Parenthood affiliates spiked to $1,655,000.  Here’s the kicker: a whopping $1,350,000 of it was granted to Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The ties between the Ford Foundation and Planned Parenthood run a little deeper still.  In 1978, Frederick S. Jaffe was the Margaret Sanger Award recipient.  According to Planned Parenthood’s website, Jaffe “created the PPFA Center for Family Planning Program Development, which later became the Alan Guttmacher Institute,” and today, the Institute is now Planned Parenthood’s research arm.  Further, Jaffe worked with the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations on population policy.

The ties between the Ford Foundation and Planned Parenthood are strong.  Why is an organization that does so much good for some weak and defenseless people assisting industries that thrive off killing the weakest and most defenseless among us?
