American Medical Association Claims Ultrasound Law “Dangerous”

Texas’ new abortion sonogram law requires that woman receive a sonogram at least 24 hours before an abortion and that the doctor plays the sound of the baby’s heartbeat for the mother and gives her the option to view the ultrasound. Seems easy enough, but abortionists are furious, stating that the law will mean women will have to wait longer for their abortion, schedule two trips to the clinic instead of one, and force clinics to have the high-demand abortionist on hand to do the sonogram.

In an interview on January 31 with The Texas Tribune, Peter Carmel, president of the American Medical Association, calls the new law, “a needless, dangerous interference with the practice of medicine by politicians.”

First of all, a woman should get an extra day to decide whether or not to abort her baby. This law allows her to view the image of her child and hear his or her heartbeat before making that final choice to end her baby’s life. The only people who would have a problem with this are the abortion providers who are now fearing that these women will change their mind about the abortion. That would mean the clinic has lost a client and in the end, that client’s money.

Secondly, since when is taking two trips to see the doctor about a surgical procedure inconvenient? We aren’t talking about taking two trips to the grocery store because you forgot to buy the cereal. Doctors see their patients multiple times before a surgery to ensure the patient is well aware of the risks, and well aware of their options. In fact, many patients go as far as to get a second opinion. When it comes to medical care (which abortionists claim abortion is), people want time to make the best decision they can.

Finally, abortionists use sonograms all the time in order to locate the baby in the uterus and determine the size of the human fetus. If they consider scheduling an ultrasound for a patient an inconvenience, then they really don’t have the woman’s best interest at heart. Ultrasounds are a medical tool created to save lives, and that is what is intended with this new law.

What it comes down to is that this new law has the potential to save lives. It offers women who are seeking abortions the opportunity to know and love their child and to make an informed decision to hopefully keep their baby or at least let her live in an adoptive family. Abortionists are crying out against the law out of the fear of losing money. And if money is their motivation, than women having babies instead of abortions is definitely going to get in the way of that.
