Actress Martha Plimpton, who plays Virginia Chance on the FOX television series Raising Hope, a role which won her an Emmy nomination, is attacking pro-life Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum.
Plimpton, who rose to prominence in the Richard Donner film The Goonies in 1985, and has appeared on Broadway and in theater throughout her career, issued a letter to the New York Times attacking Santorum on abortion.
She appears to have little concern about the attacks Santorum has faced over the mourning his family did over his son who died not long after his birth, saying the “invasive” debate over Santorum’s family is “because of Rick Santorum’s public profile.”
Then, Plimpton takes a shot at Santorum’s pro-life views: “Mr. Santorum is the one who feels that the private medical decisions made between women and their families and doctors are public property and must be regulated and scrutinized by the government.”
“The policies Mr. Santorum advocates would lead to the investigation and scrutiny of women’s medical decisions about their pregnancies. He seeks to criminalize abortion and to criminally charge doctors for performing them,” the actress falsely alleges. “How much more invasive can one get? How much bigger does the government need to be to be a presence in the examination room of every pregnant woman in the country?”
“If Mr. Santorum seeks to police women’s reproductive lives, he must expect to be subject to the same irrational, intrusive, embarrassing and degrading inquisition he intends to force on the rest of America,” Plimpton adds.
The Planned Parenthood abortion business so appreciated Plimpton’s attacks on Santorum that it tweeted the URL of the letter Tuesday afternoon.
Former Fox News show host Alan Colmes was recently taken to task for mocking pro-life Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, who brought home his dead son who died from a fatal birth defect so his family could mourn.
Santorum’s family experienced the painful loss when his wife Karen went to get an ultrasound of their unborn baby Gabriel. The doctor told the couple, “Your son has a fatal defect and is going to die.” But Gabriel was born alive.
As Santorum recalls, “For two hours he lived a life that knew only love.”
During an appearance on Fox News, Colmes said “Once they get a hold of the crazy things he’s said and done like taking his two-hour old baby who died right after childbirth home and played with it for a couple of hours so his other children would know that the child was real.”
Rich Lowry, a conservative writer for National Review, retorted: “That’s a cheap shot, Alan. To say it’s crazy, something that’s that personal and hurtful as losing a child and to mock it like that is beyond the pale and beneath you. I even think some of the dastardly characters we have in the main stream media are not going to go as low as you just have Alan.”
