Planned Parenthood: 38.4% of Its Income Comes From Abortions

Although Planned Parenthood officials like to talk about how a small percentage of the “services” it provides women are abortion-related, an analysis from Live Action indicates 38.4 percent of its clinic income is derived from abortions.

Live Action spokesman David Schmidt says Planned Parenthood is misleading the public when it talks about how important and influential its abortion business is to its overall bottom line.

“Planned Parenthood likes to talk about how only 3% of their services are abortion,” he writes at the Live Action blog. “A simple example of how they come to this calculation would be Planned Parenthood aborting 3 children and giving out 97 condoms. They would say that out of 100 services, 3 or 3% were abortion when in reality the significance and cost of the 3 abortions is much higher than 3% of their efforts.”

“Planned Parenthood’s accounting of 3% is misleading and not consistent with the rest of the business world,” Schmidt continued.

“In college I interned at the airline manufacturer Boeing, which sells a lot of airplanes and also a lot of spare parts for those airplanes. For every airplane they sold for tens of millions of dollars, they also sold lots of spare parts for as little as 25 cents. By looking at TOTAL number of sales, you could conclude that 1% of their business was selling airplanes and 99% was spare parts, which is totally ridiculous,” he explained. “The reality was the value of the airplanes sales was close to 99% of their business and the spare parts 1%. Looking at the cost and effort of what is being offered is a much more accurate way to measure.”

Schmidt does that by taking a look at the figures from its own annual report covering 2009. The report shows Planned Parenthood performed did 332,278 surgical abortions or abortions using the dangerous RU 486 abortion during in 2009 and that its clinics across the nation brought in $404.9 million in revenues.

Using an estimate from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, a former Planned Parenthood research arm that still receives funding from the abortion business for its abortion statistics and research, Schmidt indicates the average cost of an abortion is $468. Doing the math — multiplying the number of abortions times the average cost and factoring that against the total income Planned Parenthood’s clinics derived, Schmidt concludes: “This means that fully 38.4% of Planned Parenthood health center income comes directly from aborting unborn children.”

“This is a far cry from the 3% number that they try to dupe the public with,” he says. “Doesn’t it say something that even Planned Parenthood, the leading abortion chain in America, tries to downplay their role in ending the lives of unborn children? Someone feeling a little guilty?”

With approximately 1.2 million abortions done annually in the United States via surgical abortions or the mifepristone abortion drug, Planned Parenthood has increased its share of the abortion industry to 27.6 percent of all abortions done annually.

The Planned Parenthood numbers also make it more clear that women who are pregnant who come to Planned Parenthood receive only abortion services rather than help and support.

The new document the abortion organization posted shows Planned Parenthood provided prenatal services to merely 7,021 women and referred only 977 women for adoption services. These numbers were a 25 percent drop in prenatal care clients and a whopping 59 percent decline in adoption referrals from the 2,405 adoption referrals in 2008. The abortion business helped only 9,433 prenatal clients in 2008, down substantially from the 11,000 women it provided prenatal care to in 2007 — showing health care given to pregnant woman has fallen substantially over the years.

As a result, 97.6 percent of pregnant women going to Planned Parenthood are sold abortions while less than 2.4 percent of pregnant women received non-abortion services including adoption and prenatal care. That’s up from 96.5 percent of pregnant women going to Planned Parenthood getting abortions in 2008.

The Planned Parenthood report also shows the abortion business now does 340 abortions for every one adoption referral and 47 abortions for every one prenatal care client. Planned Parenthood’s own records now show 5,320,095 surgical and medical abortions done at Planned Parenthood centers from 1970 through the end of 2009.
