New Ad for De-Funding Planned Parenthood Features Abby Johnson

Today, the Susan B. Anthony List, a prominent pro-life organization, announced the launch of a $100,000 radio ad campaign in Washington, D.C. in its latest effort to secure passage of a measure to revoke Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding.

The organization also announced  a $90,000 television ad campaign in the nation’s capital as well that will run on cable channels locally.

The new commercial features Abby Johnson, the former director of a Texas clinic run by the nation’s largest abortion business. In the radio commercial, which has also been made into a video appearing on YouTube, Johnson exposes the true corporate realities behind Planned Parenthood’s business model, one which requires an “abortion quota” to increase revenue.

The ad, which starts Tuesday and runs through Thursday of next week, hits the airwaves in the Washington area on WTOP-AM and WMAL-AM, two radio stations lawmakers listen to frequently for the latest news, as Congress comes under increasing pressure to strip Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding in the next version of the Continuing Resolution funding the federal government and federal programs.

The script of the501(c)4 lobbying radio ad is as follows:

Abby: There are myths about Planned Parenthood that are spread wildly and one of those is that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms…but Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms at any of their clinics.

Announcer:  Abby Johnson tells the truth about Planned Parenthood.

Abby: Well, the bottom line about Planned Parenthood is that it’s about all the numbers….there is an abortion quota. You do have to perform so many abortions on women every month, and that is how they come up with their budget. And I know this is true because I worked there for 8 years.

98 percent of Planned Parenthood services to pregnant women are abortion services. There is only money for Planned Parenthood in abortion services.

The television script from the 501(c)3 educational ad is as follows:

Abby:  I joined Planned Parenthood because I wanted to help poor women with real health care needs. I still do.

Abby:  I learned that Planned Parenthood is not about women’s health at all. Their primary profit center and their entire corporate culture is about abortions.

Announcer:  Planned Parenthood is America’s largest abortion [provider. Ninety-eight percent of their services to pregnant women are abortions. And they receive over $360 million in tax dollars every year.

Abby:  My superiors actually instructed me to increase the number of abortions at my facility.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, told LifeNews.com:  “There is no better testament to why Planned Parenthood must be defunded than the account of a former insider whose life work is to serve women and saw first-hand how it exploits them. She found out the hard way that Planned Parenthood hides its true mission and deceives the public about its health services.  If this Congress cannot find the moral courage to relieve taxpayers of the burden this scandal-plagued organization places upon them, it is not serious about budget reform.”

Joining the Susan B. Anthony List Education Fund in co-sponsoring the television ad campaign are Expose Planned Parenthood coalition group members American Values, Catholic Advocate, and CatholicVote.org Education Fund.

“The abortion industry is often falsely portrayed as a big-hearted caring industry that simply wants to serve low-income women,” said Brian Burch, president of the CatholicVote.org Education Fund. “This is the lie that Abby Johnson has courageously exposed.  Planned Parenthood is America’s leading abortion provider, and a billion-dollar organization profiting off the American taxpayer.  Americans deserve the choice to help women without being forced to fund the abortion giant Planned Parenthood.”

“Abby Johnson’s powerful witness shows that Planned Parenthood doesn’t care about women, it cares about abortion,” said Matt Smith, vice president of Catholic Advocate. “Abby’s testimony reveals that Planned Parenthood doesn’t work to reduce the number of abortions but instead encourages employees to increase the number of abortions it performs. No wonder Planned Parenthood is America’s largest abortion provider.”

“For far too long, Planned Parenthood has tried to tell the American people that it works to reduce the number of abortions,” said Gary Bauer, president of American Values. “Yet, every year, the number of abortions they perform increases. Now we know why. Planned Parenthood is centered around abortion and actively tells employees to sell its lies to more women to fatten their bottom line.”

The ad campaign comes on the heels of a 13-district “Women Speak Out: Defund Planned Parenthood” bus tour from March 7-11 which mobilized pro-life activists across Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. In those states, SBA List, Live Action and local pro-life leaders held conferences thanking members who voted for the Pence Amendment to defund Planned Parenthood of all government funds in the continuing resolution through September and targeted those who voted against the measure. The tour was part of a larger $200,000 grassroots campaign including radio and television ads thanking members for their votes to defund Planned Parenthood.
