Lansing, MI (LifeNews.com) — A Michigan pro-life group has issued endorsements for candidates seeking the positions of Attorney general and Secretary of State. The Right to Life of Michigan Political Action Committee (RLM-PAC) has endorsed Bill Schuette and Ruth Johnson for the respective positions.

Both candidates have a history of passionately supporting and working to protect human life, the Michigan pro-life group told LifeNews.com today.

"We’re glad to endorse two qualified and committed pro-lifers for the important positions of attorney general and secretary of state," says Right to Life of Michigan president Barbara Listing. "Both candidates have a history of standing up for the voiceless and protecting the right to life."

Bill Schuette has been previously endorsed by the RLM-PAC in his races for the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, the Michigan Senate and the Michigan Court of Appeals.

While serving in the Michigan legislature, he worked on legislation to ban partial-birth abortion, restrictions on abortion facilities, protecting children who survive abortion and prosecuting criminals who attack pregnant women and their unborn children.

Ruth Johnson has been previously endorsed by the RLM-PAC in her races for the Michigan House, Oakland County clerk and lieutenant governor.

While serving in the Michigan House, she worked on legislation to ban partial-birth abortion, protect infants who survive abortion and restrictions on abortion facilities.

In addition to the endorsement for attorney general and secretary of state, RLM-PAC has made hundreds of other general election endorsements. The pro-life group expects to mail its newspaper to its members the week of September 13 with all of the federal, state and local RLM-PAC endorsements listed to use as a guide.

In addition, the RLM-PAC endorsements will be available on the Right to Life of Michigan web site, www.rtl.org, on September 15.

The endorsements on the state level are important to further the 13.9 percent decline in abortions Michigan experienced in 2009.

The report in July from the Michigan Department of Community Health showed 22,357 abortions done in Michigan during 2009 compared to 25,970 Michigan abortions reported in 2008, a drop of 3,613 abortions.

Since 1987, there has been a 54.4 percent decrease in the number of abortions done in Michigan annually and they have decreased in four of the last six years.

The number of abortions performed in 2009 represents the lowest annual total of reported abortions in Michigan since abortion businesses were required to start reporting information in 1979.
