Trenton, NJ (LifeNews.com) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has taken a second step in his bid to cut state taxpayer funding of the Planned Parenthood abortion business. He first proposed a state budget that cuts the funding and now he has eliminated a federal waiver that was used before his election to give it more.

Marie Tasy of New Jersey Right to Life is delighted by the decision.

"Governor Christie recently put a halt to another funding boondoggle scheme for Planned Parenthood that was pushed through in the waning days of the Corzine administration," she told LifeNews.com.

"The state has rescinded an application to apply for a federal waiver to reimburse Planned Parenthood 90% for Medicaid services. This was Corzine’s parting gift to Planned Parenthood," Tasy said.

Tasy points to a Planned Parenthood representative who said the elimination of the funding would potentially force the abortion business to close five of its centers.

Although Planned Parenthood says that will leave women in the lurch for the non-abortion services it provides women, Tasy says there are numerous other options available.

"Despite the bogus arguments of Planned Parenthood and its allies that women will have nowhere to go to get pap smears and gynecological services, there are a multitude of other primary care health facilities located throughout New Jersey that provide these same services," Tasy said.

"Eliminating funding of Planned Parenthood will amount to saving countless lives and prevent our tax dollars from being used to fund Planned Parenthood’s radical social agenda, which includes its peddling of abortion, especially to minors," the New Jersey Right to Life leader added.

Christie’s decision eliminates $7.4 million in Planned Parenthood funding and has it joining seven others such as Mississippi and South Dakota that have cut off funding to the abortion business even for non-abortion services.

Tasy is urging pro-life advocates to contact Governor Christie and write letters to the editor of their newspapers thanking him for his actions.
