Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) — A Catholic pro-life group says it has found more proof showing that the Caritas Christi health care system will cover abortions under a new state health plan. Massachusetts state officials awarded a bid which has Caritas Christi Health Care joining with Centene Corporation.

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts tells LifeNews.com today that the approved plan, Celticare Health Plan of Massachusetts, now says on its web site that all three of its Commonwealth Care health plans will include abortion coverage.

That means the network of six Catholic hospitals affiliated with the Archdiocese of Boston under Caritas Christi will be promoting abortions, the group contends.

Celtic Group, a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, also lists on its web site names of “Family Planning and Reproductive Services Providers," including the nation’s largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood, to which it will refer plan members.

The Catholic Action League called the revelations “final and conclusive proof that Caritas Christi will be a participant in state subsidized abortions.”

"This is the fourth time since February 26th that the Caritas/Centene partnership has indicated that abortion will be part of its Commonwealth Care contract," CAL executive director C. J. Doyle told LifeNews.com. "The question of Caritas Christi’s involvement in practices which violate fundamental Catholic moral teaching has now been answered repeatedly and definitively."

"Four officials of Caritas Christi serve on the board of a health maintenance organization (jointly founded by Caritas and its partner Celtic Group) which will refer women to Planned Parenthood for taxpayer funded abortions, as part of a government program which requires abortion coverage," Doyle continued.

The joint effort sees Caritas and Centene provide government-subsidized health insurance in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts pro-life advocates have been up in arms because an ostensibly Catholic health system appears to be the latest to deliquesce to a secular government and health care provider that has no problems with abortion.

In March, Brian Delaney, communications director for CeltiCare, owned by Centene, confirmed that the joint venture will be operational by July 1 and that it "will meet all the state’s requirements under the Commonwealth Care program, including providing family planning services as appropriate.”

Doyle is concerned that the Boston Archdiocese is not doing more to make sure abortion referrals are not taking place or to confront Caritas about them.

ACTION: Contact Caritas Christi and urge it not to begin doing abortions or referring for them. Caritas Christi Health Care, 736 Cambridge Street, Boston, MA 02135, (p) 617-789-2500, [email protected]
