Just 36% Back Obamacare as Supreme Court Review Begins

Just 36 percent of Americans back Obamacare, which is opposed by pro-life groups because it funds abortions and prompts rationing concerns, as the Supreme Court begins reviewing the controversial law this week.

A new New York Times/CBS News poll shows 47 percent of Americans disapprove of the president’s Affordable Care Act, including 30 percent who strongly disapprove while just 36 percent of those questioned said they support the law either somewhat or strongly.

“Since the health care law was passed in March 2010, more have disapproved than approved of it. The highest level of support was reached in May 2010 when 43percent of Americans approved of the law; its lowest level was just after it was passed in March 2010, when only 32 percent supported it,” CBS reported.

CBS indicates Republicans and independents oppose Obamacare while Democrats are supportive.

“Opinions of the health care law break down largely along party lines. Most Republicans disapprove of it, including six in 10 who disapprove strongly, while most Democrats approve. Among independents, just under half are opposed to the law,” it notes. “There are differences when the results are broken down by age, as well. Americans under age 30 are the most likely of any age group to approve of the law. Among those who are older, more disapprove of the law than approve of it.”

At the Supreme Court, people started waiting outside the chambers on Friday to catch three days of oral arguments over the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare as opponents call it.  It’s one of the most controversial cases to come before the nation’s highest court in years.

Jay Sekulow, an attorney with the ACLJ, talked about why pro-life advocates have every reason to oppose Obamacare.

“Under President Obama’s new mandates, the government forces you to pay for health insurance that covers the abortion pill, and you must also pay a monthly abortion “surcharge,” he noted. “Every person of faith must stand up to this radical pro-abortion assault.”

“Over the next three days, the ObamaCare oral arguments will be heard before the Supreme Court,” he said. “Roe v. Wade made it a “right” to end the life of an unborn child; ObamaCare forces every taxpayer to help pay to end the life of an unborn child. As we have said since the beginning, ObamaCare uses taxpayer dollars to dramatically grow the abortion business. Now we know that President Obama is also forcing citizens to directly pay an abortion surcharge with health insurance plans.”

“Forcing us to pay for abortion is not only a moral outrage, it is a violation of our constitutional rights,” Sekulow added.

“Not only do Obama’s pro-abortion regulations force coverage of the abortion pill, Obama’s newest regulation forces you to directly pay for abortions. If you have health insurance – and under ObamaCare, you must – you could be required to pay at least $1 a month for abortions,” Sekulow explained. “In effect, the government is forcing you to take out your wallet and hand Planned Parenthood $12 to commit abortions.”

“The ACLJ has filed the first lawsuit challenging the HHS mandate on behalf of an individual citizen, an American citizen of faith, who knows that under our Constitution, the government cannot force him to violate his religious beliefs when paying for health insurance,” he said. “Every person of faith should have the right to opt out of paying for abortion. ObamaCare and the new abortion-pill mandate from President Obama’s HHS are unconstitutional.”
